“What is your calling?”

That feels like such a big question, doesn’t it? It sometimes seems like we need a really profound and deep philosophical answer. But if there’s one thing I’m not it’s deep and philosophical. LOL. I’m pretty much “what you see is what you get” kind of girl.

I read a book a few years ago that radically changed my worldview and my idea of “calling.” The book is “The Cause Within You.” The author essentially concludes that we were all designed to serve others. Period. As he puts it “We GET to serve.” That’s why we get such great satisfaction when we help others, donate our time, share our resources.

The key then for each of us is figuring out WHO we are meant to serve. This is where we benefit by a little introspection to look at our individual gifts and talents. Friends, those gifts are not an accident. They are initimately related to our calling. My gifts will propel me to serve in a certain area. Yours will direct you somewhere else. And when you combine those gifts with your service, that is where true JOY is found. Not joy from our external circumstances. Rather joy from deep within. Joy from knowing who we are and whose we are. Joy that can’t be taken away when hard times come. Sure, we may be unhappy when tough times hit us, but we can still be joyful.

I’ve been thinking about this question of purpose and calling a lot this past year. That’s what happens when you uproot your life and leave behind everything and everyone you know.

As Derek and I have launched our new construction business I can see how God is using each of our gifts, our education, and our training to build a company that honors God, serves others in providing work, allows us to come beside families to build relationships and grow together while building a home.

With the amount of time devoted to starting something new, I’ve also been examining where else I spend my time. What things can I let go of? What seasons have come to an end to make room for a new one?

I have been thinking a lot about coaching. About why I started this journey. Even back before that. About womens ministry, leading health groups at church, about hosting groups of women in my house to take about calling and purpose. This has been my heart’s desire for years, long before coaching.

And every day, even in the midst of the demands of a new business, I hear from women whose lives have been changed. They’ve finally embraced making their health a priority. They have quietly shown their families that mom is worth fighting for. They’ve lost weight, or gained strength or found new confidence. THAT is why I know coaching is still my calling and this is still my season. When I get back to basics, this is still my heart. And this is still what I want to do, and share and use to inspire others.

So like everyone I’m busy and I have a lot on on my plate. But along with raising up young men, I believe I am walking in my calling, in this season.

Friends, we GET to serve. Explore your gifts. Make an inventory of your talents. Then find your people and serve them.
