God calls us to follow one sentence, one period, at a time. And if you are like me, connecting those dots usually does not result in a straight line.

Twenty-three years ago I graduated from law school and embarked on a legal career in the area of construction law. I transitioned from litigation to transaction work helping people start businesses and advising and counseling them on their day to day operations. Long hours. (Lots of coffee).

The next step on my path? Seven years as a stay at home mom. With three boys under three I had my hands more full then any law practice. (And lots of coffee).

Next, an opportunity to work part time advising an expanding construction company (where my husband also worked) presented itself and I loved being in the workforce, having lunch with adults and going to the bathroom without little people knocking on the door. (And coffee breaks).

Shortly before leaving that job I started my own health and fitness business – completey by accident. My personal passion for fitness became intertwined with my desire and my ministry to see women walking in their calling, discovering their purpose and pursung their passions. And being healthy – mind, body and spirit.

When we walked away from that company together, we weren’t really sure where our next steps would lead. What we couldn’t see coming was that within 18 months we would purchase a piece of the country in Texas and begin to transition everything in our lives.

I could never have known that the coaching business I adored and did because it fueled my spirit would be the one piece of the puzzle that would remain constant over the next couple of years. It was flexible, I worked from home and I interacted with my clients, coaches and team online. In fact, my team was my lifeline in those final months of transition and moving to a new state. I didn’t know a soul in Texas, I couldn’t find the grocery store, but I could get online daily and connect with my community, the people who I was building my life with daily.

When we landed in Texas we knew Derek would continue in the area of construction. We did not yet know that we’d be working together again building a dream, a business and a life for our family. Out of the story God had written of our lives to that point, Story Builders was born. God was tying together every piece of our backgrounds – architecture, contracting, construction law, risk management, social media and our hearts to build relationships with people.

One sentence. One period. One step at a time. A completely non-linear journey to building a family, and building a life.

Is it perfect? Nope. Is it scary? You bet. But what if I didn’t pursue my passion to coach? What if we didn’t listen to that still small voice in our hearts to build our construction company? We’d have missed out on this season. This step. And our journey may have taken us in a completely different direction. I’m pretty sure God’s plans are higher than ours. His dreams for us are greater than we can ever imagine.

Settle your spirit. Set aside some quiet time. Pour yourself a cup of coffee. And then listen.

What is that voice telling you?

Are you going to listen? He’s only asking you to take the first step.

Surrender your agenda and let God direct your story! Your life will never be the same!
